The Movie Version...

Now that you have seen the movie version of The Crucible, write a brief review of the movie.  Be sure to include parts that you liked and why you liked them, as well as descriptions of the parts you didn't like and why you didn't like them.

  1. In the movie the Crucible, their was a group of girls that were dancing around a fire in the woods and they all acted like they saw the devil when Tituba confessed to seeing the devil when she actually did. They accused innocent people and if they did not confess to witchcraft they would be hung. Abigail was the one who started all of this. I liked the movie at times, my favorite parts were when the girls all started freaking out to get attention from everyone in the town. Abigail accused many people that were close to John Proctor just so she could have him to herself, but in the end he ended up getting hung.

  2. The Crucible was a really good movie, although there were many changes from the book. I liked the argument in court, it was very much like the book. I also liked the part where John Proctor wouldn't confess to something he didn't do. I disliked the ending when they hung everybody even though they knew the girls were lying. Also, I didn't like the part where Giles Corey was killed for just not giving up someones name.

  3. I really did like Crucible the movie. It definitly moved me in most parts and in others I could have went without. But for parts I like were at the end when the scene showed John Proctor, Rebeca Nurse and Martha Corey. Because it resemled the crucifiction of Jesus Christ.
But for the parts i could have been without were when Proctor and Goody Proctor both came out of the jail and haven't brushed there teeth or cleaned up after days. And appearing so revokig they kissed and it wasnt just a regular one at that.

  4. The movie version of "The Crucible" was a great movie by my standards my reason for thinking this is because of the fact that the movie shows how powerful that we are not when were not united and when we are in a bad, scary situation. Some of the parts of the movie i liked the most was when john proctor and his wife were arguing but then they in a sense found their atonement to each other by having said some long overdo things on the beach before they unfortunately had to be hung.

  5. The movie: The Crucible, was not a very good movie in my opinion. I din't get to see the whole movie, but the parts I saw I did not like. The actors did not do as good a job as I had pictured when reading the play. The first few scenes-including the scene in the woods, the scene when Betty wakes up, and the scene with only John Proctor and Elizabeth-were not remotely what I pictured when reading. I my opinion, it was not a good movie at all.

  6. In the movie the Crucible people are getting hanged because they are being accused of doing witchcraft. People agree that they are dancing with the devil from kept from getting hanged even though that they was lying. I didn't like the part where they was getting hanged it was very sad. I also didn't like that Abagail accused everyone else for things. I liked that John Proctor stood up for other people. I did enjoy watching the Crucible it was an interesting movie.

  7. In the movie I like how they used the scenery to capture the specific action in the scene. I also like how the actor and actresses use the surroundings to show what is happening or going on they show the character's true feelings. They also show how the girls do play off of one another in the scenes. I also like the end when they use some imagery to show another movie ("The Passion of Christ"). To me the actors and actresses did extremely well in capturing the heart of the story or play. I personally like the movie more than the book. For me I like to look and see what is going on I personally like to see what and how things are happening and how they are suppose to look and be. I know I can understand better if can see it and hear how it sounds to understand and know what is going on. To me the Book does get depth into what is happening and so you can think how it looks, but for me it is easier to understand the passion of the book if I see how it looks in that time span or the writer's point of view.

  8. The characters I believed in most were Elizabeth Proctor, the Rev. Hale, and Judge Danforth. As written and acted, they seem like plausible people doing their best in an impossible situation.

  9. I personally did not like this movie at all. Winona Rider did an awful job at playing Abigail. The movie was nothing like I imagined it to be. When the girls were in the woods, when Betty woke up and was trying to fly out of the window, and when they were in court and the girls went crazy were all parts I did not like. It is kind of obvious that the girls are lying when they all start doing the same exact thing. The movie was just disappointing.

  10. My favorite part of The Crucible was when Danforth asked Elizabeth about her husband committing any crimes or adultery because it was very suspenseful. Elizabeth wanted to defend her husband by lying about his relationship with Abigail because she did not want him to hang. The part I did not like was when Abigail accusing innocent people for dancing with the devil because Abigail were causing innocent people to hang because of her dirty lies. I think Abigail should have been the one to hang for all her doings. I think the actors and actresses did a perfect job because they chosed the right people for this movie. Daniel Day Lewis played John Proctor; he was the main character of the play. Wynona Ryder as Abigail Williams; she was made for that part. I loved this movie because it explains that regular dancing in the sixteenth century were taken for witchcraft.

  11. In the movie I have to say i liked the way they characters were dramatic. They really showed their expressions well. They helped you to capture the feelings and problems in the movie. The movie helps you capture and understand the real problems in the story. In this movie you really capture the authors point of view. I think it is important that the writer of a story can make his own story a movie. That's when I think the movies are at their finest. Because only the writer knows the way the story was really intended. The Crucible was a story of passion and struggle. I really think the movie captured the true meaning provided in the story.

  12. In the crucible, adolescent girls are found in the woods dancing around a witches brew in the nude. Then when the girls are questioned about it, they blame everything on tituba. This is my favorite part because the girls are making up lies just get out of the trouble they have caused. I didn't like the ending, because they hung everyone, even though they knew the girls were lying. The girls accused innocent people of witchcraft, and if they didn't confess to it they would be hung. so either way the accused would have been punished for something they didn't do.

  14. I liked how in the movie it show how much and how unfair Judge Hawthorn was and how he said that only the victims can really tell us about who is doing the magic and the reason we have to believe them because magic is invisible. I liked how in the movie and in the book were the same in certains spots of the book like in the court room. And when and Proctor was hanged along with the nurse even though the people knew that they were innocent. They died happy knowing that they stay faithful toward God. And the movie was different in many ways by the way that i thought the characters look like and acted.

  15. I actually liked the movie a little bit. It seemed to be a good movie and seemed to be a little bad here and there. There were parts that were good and parts that were bad. Abigail got everybody killed. Winona Ryder did a good job playing Abigail. Daniel Day-Lewis done a good job playing John Proctor. John was a real believable character. I like how John actually stood up for everyone and stood up to Abigail. Overall this was a good movie.

  16. In the movie the Crucible people are getting hung for something that they did not do at all they was accused for witch craft. The people agreed that they are dancing with the devil in the woods to keep them from getting themselves hung even from lying. I really did not like the part where the people get hung for something that they did not do.I thought that John Proctor standing up for the people that abigail accused for things. I thought that it was the best movie ever.

  17. I really like the movie version of "The Crucible." It brought the book to life for me. I really like the way the actors played the role of a 18th century Puritan colony. Also, the actors seemed to fit each part. Winona Ryder looked as though she was made for the part of the young, sneaky, and mischief Abigail. However, I do not like how slow the play was. It took forever for the climax to unfold. I often got bored with the plot. People kept being accused, but no one was getting punished for their actions until close to the end. All together I think I would give the movie 3 stars.

  18. When you think of "The Crucible," witchcraft probably comes to mind. Irony played a huge role in this movie and this story because there was no witchcraft! There was however, jealousy, greed, and selfishness involved. I personally enjoyed the movie very much. Winona Ryder is an amazing actress because I absolutely hated her character, Abigail. Daniel Day-Lewis was a very believable John Proctor. The whole cast did an amazing job. I liked how they put some scenes in the movie that weren't in the book. For example, I liked how they actually showed the girls and Tituba in the woods in the beginning, and the confrontation between John and Abigail. This was actually a really good movie.

  19. "The Crucible" is a story and movie about the Salem Witch Trials. In it, the characters are being accused of witchcraft by the town's girls after they get caught dancing naked in the woods. I personally didn't like Abigail because she was the main one accusing everyone and she stole half a years pay from her uncle and fled town when things got too heated up for her. The characters I liked were John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, Reverend Hale, and Reverend Paris. John stood up for what he knew and wouldn't admit to what he didn't do. Elizabeth was a housewife that was being targeted by Abigail. Reverend Hale was a Holy Man that Paris called to town to look in to the talk of witchcraft. Reverend Paris was the town preacher who's daughter was affected by some mysterious ailment in the beginning. Overall, it had a good cast of characters, interesting plot, and historical background, making it a good movie.

  20. The Crucible movie was a really good movie. The first part of the Crucible shows the girls sneaking out of their houses and running through the forest. The next part it shows the girls standing around a boiling pot dancing naked and shouting out the names of boys that want to cast a spell on. So that the boys they are in love with will love them back. Then the Reverend Parris goes into the woods looking for his girls and as he is walking through the woods he is finding some of the girls clothes. As Reverend Parris continues walking he comes upon the girls dancing around the boiling pot naked and Reverend Parris catches Abigail and his daughter dancing around the pot and he punishes them. But he doesn't tell anyone about what he saw the girls doing in the woods. But soon it gets out about the girls in the woods and the people of the town start accusing people of witchcraft. They start accusing people because of what that person has done something to them that they didn't like or he or she is with someone that someone else wants to be with. They did this because if someone accuses someone else of witchcraft they will be hanged. I didn't like it when Abigail started accusing other people of witchcraft just to draw the attention away from her. But I did like that John Proctor stood up for the people. When Abigail was accusing the people he is closest to because she wants to be with him. But Abigail just gets John Proctor hung. I didn't like that Abigail accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft just so she can be with John Proctor. But I liked it when John Proctor stood up for people that were to scared to tell the court what they thought.

  21. In the movie The Crucible, I liked how John Procter portrayed this farmer and hard working townsman, and he really didn't bother anyone about the witches and the taking of his wife. I also don't like the feud that is going on between Abigail and John's wife Elizabeth, all of it's over John and they just despise each other for it. I didn't like the person playing Abigail [ Winona Ryder] because she acted way different than I expected Abigail to act during the movie. So I didn't really like her because she was mean and hateful to everyone, even in the book she wasn't as bad as in the movie. I believe that's it, other than Abigail I liked The Crucible.

  22. The Crucible was a fascinating movie about girls committing witchcraft, a love affair and broken trusts. My favorite part of the part had to be when they were in the court room and all the girls, including the harlet, Abigail pretended to "feel the evil spirits inside" the innocent girl. My least favorite part was when the good people got hung. I mean really that was horrible.

  23. In the movie The Crucible it is certain parts that I like in the movie. For example: I like at the end of the movie when John Proctor would confess of worshipping the devil but he knew it was all a lie, so he rather die worshipping god than let people know a lie. The part in the movie I didn't like was when Abigail lied on Tituba and said she worships the devil and made Tituba lie, along with all the girls. Abigail started all of this nonsense because she wanted to be with John Proctor. But even though there were certain parts I didn't like, Overall it was a good movie.

  24. I have disliked the movie so far. That does not mean it was a bad movie. I actually think the movie was quite well produced. The storyline and plot closely followed that of the play, except in the beginning. This movie opens with the girls actually partaking in the actions of witchcraft; this was definitely not in the play for a reason.

The play was built on the false accusations held within the Salem witch trials; which were created by the church and the court. The movie focused on how the girls were trying to evade being found out and only that. In the play, they were only confessing to avoid being hanged for not confessing. In the movie, they were confessing to save themselves from actually being persecuted from actions the audience actually saw them doing.

I find this to be the major fault of the movie. This reason would be the only negative attribute I find the movie to hold. Other than that the movie was quite okay, just a writers own interpretation of the original. An interpretation I disagree with.

  25. The Crucible was a movie about the town girls going into the woods and participating in witchcraft with the maid. This causes so much chaos in the town of Salem. People begin to get accused of the most childish things. Unfortunately, with all of the craziness going on people begin to get hung like Rebeccah Nurse, Sarah Good, Elizabeth Howe, John Proctor, etc.
I enjoyed this movie. I loved all the suspence in it. I hated how John Proctor was hung. Abigail's ways was very childish in this film. In some parts it was sad and in others it had its humor. In all though I would reccommend this movie to anyone interested in learning about the past and what times were like back then. I give this movie a strong 8 out of 10

  26. "The Crucible" was not a movie that lived up to the first expectations it gave me. When the movie first started it hinted at signs of witchcraft. Which led me to believe witchcraft would play apart of it. The movie basically was he say she say stuff. Abigail claimed ta few people committed witchcraft to get the townspeople off her head. The other girls of the village followed in suit. John Proctor committed adultery with Abigail. Abigail wanted John Proctor to herself so she wanted to get his wife Elizabeth out the way. Wrongly excusing her, in the meantime the other girls where putting the other women in jail.

  27. The movie "The Crucible" starts in the small town of Salem, where the problem of witchery has supposedly arose. This problem came about as the town girls were all dancing in the woods, brewing witch craft in a pot, and making harmless sacrifices to get men that they want. As the main character Abigail Williams constructs and lead this, she makes a blood sacrifice to be with a married man John proctor(who she has already had fornication with, but is kicked out and shunned away by John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth Proctor). This action immediately frightens all the other girls and ends the dancing in the woods.

The girls were spotted in the woods as they took these actions by Rev. Parris. All of the sudden after this, bad things begin to happen in the town. The towns people then became paranoid after finding out about witch craft in the town. Rev. Parris consults Rev. Hale who tries to make the girls confess, but the girls begin to act out and falsely accuse all the women in the Town. The towns people then call forth Judge Danforth (a judge who is well known for his convictions of witches).
They girls are sent to court to confess, but they act hysterically to try to seem innocent and pure. The lies cause many to be judged in court and many convicted for no reason at all. The only person who could possibly end this is John Proctor, if he confesses his wrong doings with Abigail.

  28. The movie, "The Crucible" tied it all together for me. The movie put everything together that was supposed to be together, and also separated things that were not supposed to be together. Everything was just how I pictured an 18th century colony to be. The actors also seemed to fill out the roles that their characters portrayed to have in the book. Although the movie was good, it took really long for them movie to reach the climax. Just like how everyone was being accused, but no one was being trialed or punished. Overall I would give the movie 4 stars.

  29. The movie version of "The crucible" is about girls in a village who partake in witchcraft. The whole village is is going crazy, pointing fingers and dodging accusations while the girls try to cover their tracks. My favorite parts of the movie where the ones with all the hysteria. Abigail and Proctor were my favorite characters, Abigail because how crazy she was, and Proctor because the type of person he was.

  30. "The Crucible" was a well thought out thriller that fell a little short of being a classic. "The Crucible" tells a tale of how a little mischief can lead to a big problem, among other things such as; rebellion, accusation, lust, and hysteria. The movie is set in Salem during the trials and starts out with a group of girls(the girls of Salem) dancing around a cooking pot, and a black woman(Tituba the servant) mixing some random ingredients that the girls brought to her. The girls throw the ingredients into the pot right after confessing who they want to marry them All of this seems like harmless fun ,if a little inappropriate, until a tall and pretty looking girl whispers something in Tituba's ear. Tituba then looks horrified and refuses to do whatever the girl asks however the girl takes a chicken, smashes its head, and drinks its blood and then proceeds to strip naked. That girl is actually Abigail Williams, a lustful young girl who is surprisingly dangerous. Her uncle reverend Parris then comes out of the woodwork and causes the girls to flee. News of this quickly spreads throughout the village and soon everyone is on hiatus. Abigail has already been questioned about what she was doing in the woods by her uncle however she shifts the blame towards Tituba. Then Tituba blames someone else and the rest of the girls follow and soon many innocent people are being taken to court and wrongly accused of witchcraft. These scenes make the story interesting and you will probably want to see the ending as more characters are brought on to the story including John Proctor, a very important character to the story. In the end "The Crucible" is a well done story, if a little unbelievable however the movie left an interesting message about hysteria and how it can effect people.

  31. The Crucible in my opinion was an "okay" movie, it has many things in it that were good but they didn't out weigh the bad. The good things include the story in general, it was very fast paced (as it could have been in those days) but it was balanced out with the bad acting of most of the characters, if you pay attention to the characters you will see that they have a certain modern feeling to it. i believe that the casting was poor on the casting directors part. Abigail mostly, when I read the play she seemed like a less desperate girl than the modern day preppy teenage wench I see in the movie. And John Proctor as well, Daniel Day-Lewis was a dry actor in this movie and didn't seem like the John Proctor I envisioned in the play. But Elizabeth was the one that saved it for me, she seemed like the loving wife that I saw in my mind while reading the play. If I were to rate this movie i would give it a two and a half to three stars.

  32. It is hard for me to write my opinion of the movie because I have only seen a few minutes of it. The parts I have seen do not match up to my expectations of what I thought it would be like. However, the acting is really great. Winona Ryder plays Abigail's role so well. She is an amazing actress because she makes the audience hate her by her actions.

The whole town of Salem is going crazy with chaos. Everyone is afraid of getting accused next. The play and movie are similar in that they both portray the town's reactions in the same way. Overall, the movie has been ok. I would give it a 7 out of 10.

  33. I didn't like that Abagail accused everyone else for things. I liked that John Proctor stood up for other people. The Crucible was an okay movie it wasn't the best, but I enjoyed watching it. I would say that Procotr was my favorite character i loved his personality.Another thing I didnt't like was how Abagail acted she was just accused everyone for thing they didn't do. It was an alright movie.

  34. I liked the part at the end when Proctor confesses that he is guily of witchcraft but refuses to write it down because he knows it'll always haunt him and people would judge him, plus he was llying about doing it. I didn't like the part when the girls were pretending to see the bird and they were runnin goutside screaming. The movie overall, was almost just like the play. It had a good moral to it.

  35. The movie version of the Crucible was totally different than what I expected it to be. I didn't get to see even half, but the parts I did see were interesting and drew my attention. My favorite part is at the end where the truth is coming out and Proctor is about to get hung for not telling the truth. This was my favorite part because it drew my attention in, and was not boring like a lot of the other scenes.

  36. The crucible was not what I expected it to be. It began with these young girls being in the woods dancing around the fire with the devil. A man seen them but did not speak of it. When it was discovered these young girls lied because they were afraid of being punished. The reverend knew that they were lying because he was the man who seen them. Abigail and John has relation and it was how all the witchcraft began. John knew if he admitted to committing adultery his name would be ruined. His wife tried so hard to protect his name. But when those young ladies was called to court to say who they seen dancing with the devil John wife was named. He knew Abigail would do that and he tired stopping her. When innocent people were taken to jail and later hanged John knew it was time for some to be done. Marry Warren helped him at first and then she turned back to the younger girls. This ruined John and had him thrown in jail. Later his only option left was to give up the only thing left to him and that was his name.

  37. The Crucible did not interest me at all. I dislike the beginning when Abigail and the girls were dancing in the woods and pretended to see the devil. When Tituba really did see the devil they accused innocent people. The part when the girls were acting crazy to get attention was pretty funny, but other than that in my opinion the movie was dumb. I absolutely hated the end when John Prctor didn't confess to something he didn't do and was hung for it.

  38. The Crucible was an okay movie. I did not get to watch the whole movie but the little parts that I did watch I really did not like. I did not like the first part when the girls were in the woods dancing in the woods around the fire with the devil, I actually thought that was nonsense. I did not like how Abigail accused everyone else for her mistakes and problems. The only part I like is when Proctor confessed that he was guilty at the end when he was about to get hung for not confessing. I think he was the only honest person this movie. This movie should have been acted in a different and better way, but overall it was an okay movie.
