Mary Warren Stands Up...

Looking back at lines 323-344 in Act Two, it appears obvious that Mary's defense of Elizabeth Proctor in court changed the power dynamics among Mary, Elizabeth, and John Proctor.  How is the situation in the Proctor household a microcosm of the upheaval going on throughout the community?  And is Proctor correct in his analysis of the situation in lines 880-884 of Act Two?

  1. Marry now has power over the fate of Elizabeth. At first Mary was just a lowly servant now all she has to do is say that she saw her practicing witch craft to send her off to jail. Same with the rest of the community.Yes John is right. All because Elizabeth kicked Abigail out and Abigail wants to marry John that this whole mess was started.

  2. It is a microcosm of the upheaval in the community because the youngest girl has gained power over the others. The same is true of the community, As young girls(Abigail, Betty, and Mary Warren) Have power over older people. Yes, Proctor is correct in His analysis of the situation, although rather impassioned about it.

  3. The Proctor house hold is like a microcosm of the upheaval going on throughout the community because Mary Warren stood up to John Proctor, which is happening in community. The reason she stood up to Proctor is because she was with the court and his holding the fact she saved Elizabeth Proctor from going on trial for being a witch. This is shown in Act II of the Crucible first by saying in lines 323-324, "Mary Warren: (pointing at Elizabeth). I saved her life today!". Then in part of her explanation of what happened lines 332-336, "Mary Warren: I am bound by law, I cannot tell it. (to Proctor) I only hope you'll not be so statistical no more. Four judges and the King's deputy sat to dinner with us but an hour ago. I-I would have you speak civilly of me, from this out." This shows that she is changing the role from servant to master by using John's love for his wife against him. John corrects this by saying in lines 880-884, "We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little children are jangling the keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law! This warrant's vengeance! I'll not give my wife to vengeance!". You see what he is saying here is that the group of girls that is causing all of this is only doing it to the people they do not like to get revenge, or back at them. For example Abigail only did this to Elizabeth Proctor because she is in love with John Proctor after their affair but he feelings for her. So Abigail thinks if she kills Elizabeth that John will fall in live with her. Which that is not true, it is even stupid to think.

  4. The proctor house hold is like a microcosm of the upheaval going on throughout the community because Mary Warren stood up to John Proctor, which is happening in the community. I only hope you will not be statistical, no more four judges and the kings deputy sat to dinner with us but an hour ago. I-I would have you speak civilly of m, from this out." That shows she is changing roles from servant to master by using Johns love for his wife against him, John however corrects this in lines 883-884 by saying " We are what we always were, in Salem, but now the little children are jangling the keys of the kingdom and common vengeance writes the law! I will not give my wife to the vengeance." He is saying here, is the group of girls that's causing all this is only doing this to the people they do not like. They are trying to get revenge.

  5. When Mary tells John and Elizabeth that she defended Elizabeth in court she tries to show that she is her own independent person and also has more power in the town than they do. Mary also unknowingly shows John and Elizabeth the corrupt nature of the council that blindly follows Abigail's accusations of other people. Proctor is correct when he says that vengeance is walking Salem because Abigail is using witchcraft to get back at everyone who she doesn't like or people who she thinks have wronged her. This is shown when Abigail accuses Elizabeth even though Abigail was shown to have confessed that she and nobody else had nothing to do with witchcraft.

  6. In lines 323-344 Mary Warren claims to have saved Elizabeth's life in court that day because she was accused. This changed the possible friendship between Mary and Elizabeth. Elizabeth and John were already having troubles now she is being accused of witchcraft. In lines 880-884 Proctor is talking about how Salem isn't full of witchcraft but full of vengeance. The theory of microcosm is that this is a small world and vengeance spreads through it like a wild fire through a forest. I do believe Proctor was correct that the people of Salem were full of vengeance and not witchcraft.

  7. In lines 323-344 Mary reveals that she is a court official and that Elizabeth has been charged with witchcraft, and in those lines she openly begins to disobey orders now that she has power over the outcome of Elizabeth's trial.

  8. The situation is a microcosm of what is going on throughout the community because it's the exact thing that is going on between the people of the village. People are accusing others of the same thing, but others are trying to prevent those that are accused from being wrongfully accused. Lines 323-344 shows how Mary Warren is Try to help prevent Elizabeth from being accused by Abigail. From Mary Warren saving Elizabeth she is demonstrating her new power among them and she shows this power towards Proctor when he orders her to go to her room and she stamps her foot and says "i'll not be ordered to bed no more." Though after this Mary Does decide to go to bed anyways.
This does in some way show that Proctor's analysis is correct because Proctor says "We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law! This warrant's vengeance!", because the warrant is only vengeance from Abigail towards Elizabeth Proctor's wife. Also because Mary Warren is showing her new power of being part of the court-"little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom."

  9. The situation in the Proctor household is just a small part of what is happening in the community. Elizabeth is being mentioned in court, just like many others in the community. Mary is an official of the court, just like many others in the community. John is just wrapped up in all of the mess, once again, just like many others in the community. His wife is being mentioned in court. Mary Warren will no longer obey him. This is similar to what happens in the community. Mary is rebellious, like those who have practiced witchcraft. Elizabeth is just worried and confused and is willing to say anything, just like others who have not done anything but have been accused. John is like the Deputy Governor. He has not been involved with witchcraft (as far as we know) and he is not being accused. He is making the decisions. For instance, he tells Mary that she will not leave the house again and that she will go to bed. Yes, he is correct in his analysis of the situation. He is saying that things have always been the way they are in Salem. Nothing has changed. People just want to get revenge for things that have happened to them in the past.

  10. It seems that in the Proctor house Mary is trying to gain some respect. She believes that since she somewhat saved Elizabeth's life in court that she should be treated as an adult. In Salem there are different people now requesting new power, and people are arguing and having new disputes. Also there is much suspicion both in the Proctor house and in Salem as a whole.
I believe that Proctor is correct in his analysis. These things have probably been happening in Salem for a long time. It is just now that it is being brought into the light by those who have no skills in being secretive. He is right in the fact that without decent evidence they shouldn't be able to accuse and maybe even execute his wife. Just because things are only now being brought into the light doesn't mean everyone should go on a witch hunt.

  12. Mary defended Elizabeth Proctor in court, which saved Elizabeth. But, with her even associating with the court made John Proctor mad. When Mary spoke up, she felt as if she had all the power in the household of the Proctors. The situation is very similar in Salem. Abigail thinks she has all the power of the town because she is the one accusing people and they believe her, when really the court should have the power. Yes, Proctor is correct on his analysis. He states that little kids are ruling their town which is true because Abigail is making everyone believe her.

  13. The power dynamics have changed due to Mary virtually holding Elizabeth's life in her hands. This situation mirrors how Abigail has gained the upper hand against the townspeople. Any one of them could be killed by her word. Proctor is correct in his analysis, seemingly he is the only adult to even realize what is going on.
