What could have been...
Imagine that Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible" is set in the present day, instead of in the 17th century. Given the current advancements in technology, how might things have changed? Concentrate your response on the technology we have used in this class (Google Search, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sites, Blogger,...). If the characters in the play had access to these tools, what could they have done differently?
If the Crucible took place in our time period today, the ending would have been different in many ways. If they would have had technology tools such as email, Blogger, and Google plus things would be very different. People could have saved Abigail's emails, which would be good proof on her of lying. John Proctor could have made a blog where people could express their feelings and everyone could see it. Abigail might have been more careful, if these tools were there. She wouldn't have told as many lies. The ending of this story probably would have resorted to Abigail being hung.
ReplyDeleteWell they could have looked on Abigail's Gmail to see if she emailed anyone about the lies she told which she probably did. Email could have also them over turn the court because they would have heard about what happened in Andover, which would have saved many lives. Then they could have searched for more information on Google about witches to help the investigation for each side. Then they could use Google Docs to type up there finds and other evidence. Social Media could have hurt the case because we know that is where all rumors spread. Mostly these things could have saved people from dying and hanging, but in the modern world they probably would have died from lethal injection. Then again it could of also helped the court convict the people.
ReplyDeleteIf the play took place in present time, a lot of things would be different. I think Abigail would have been a babysitter instead of a maid. And she would have been blogging about all the things her and John Proctor did. She would probably even make a Facebook page that was like "We Hate Goody Proctor." And instead of being hung, they would have been shot or drugged.
ReplyDeleteThings could have been different if the author was in our century. Abigail would have emailed others things and stuff and they would have been able to see it. Also if they were in the 21st century then they would have had more knowledge about things such as witchcraft. Sometimes people get so caught up in lies they don't realize it when the truth is right in front of them. Therefore if she would have emailed the truth to someone, they would be able to see it for themselves and they would have known the truth and so many people would not have been punished for someone else's lies. Also because they would have had internet knowledge and they could have just googled information about witches and witchcraft and they would have been more familiar with it, and they would know that all those people were not witches it was just Abigail wanting revenge and telling lies on others.
ReplyDeleteThese social networking would've probably made it worse. The rumors would've spread a lot faster then they had. The play lasted over a few months. With social media being instant then the play would've been like a week or two long. More people probably would've been killed too.
ReplyDeleteThey could of notified more people using the technology of today. Like Facebook since it is for keeping people updated and finding out what is going on with family and friends. Though this might have been a faster way to start a riot, it might have been a good way to protest against the slaughter of the innocent. They could have also used Gmail to notify others and explain it in detail. They could have a friend find a higher authority than the court that they currently live with. Though in my opinion I doubt it would saved the accused if everyone was so crazed on witchcraft at the time.
ReplyDeleteWell having the Technology we have now the play would have been a whole lot different. For Starters, these days we live in now few people believe in witchcraft and they wouldn't be murdered for it. But having Google and Gmail the girls could have started nationwide conspiracy in days using Google. But many lives would have been saved using the court systems we have now.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all they would have been shot and not hung. Abigail would have done a lot of cyber bullying. She would have spread all the rumors over facebook.
ReplyDeleteIf "The Crucible" was set in present day, it would not have ended the same way that it did. With the technology that we are dealing with today, I think there would have been way more drama included in the story. The main thing that would have added drama would have been Facebook. The word would have spread way faster than it did in the old days. Also, people could have created websites and pages that could express what they think about the witchcraft. The main thing that would have changed about the way they killed the people because now it is not humane to hang people.
ReplyDeleteIf they had the technology we have today ! think the conclusion we have came out way different. If they had Google they could have searched many things about witches and figured out if Abigail was lying. It could have changed it to were it was bad too. If Abigail had facebook she could have spread the rumors way more and got alot more people accused of it all. If John Proctor had an email he could have got it around that Abigail was lying.
ReplyDeleteshe would have been in more trouble because people would have seen her comments
ReplyDeleteAbigail would of been a cyber bully bully. She would of use Facebook to condemn innocent people of witchcraft. So all the people she didn't like she could just post on Facebook that they were a witch then they would be condemned. She would use Gmail and stuff to talk to the girls and tell the the plans. She would also tell them she would kill them if the were to say anything about there little secret and there plan to kill goody proctor.
ReplyDeleteIf they had the internet or more technology it would've changed things for the better. They could have communicated more with people in the town, telling them the truth. They could have also searched the ways of witchcraft, and proved themselves right. They're penalty also would not have been hung, they may have been killed other ways. Also if they had phones or email John Proctor could prove that Abigail was also involved in the affair.
ReplyDeleteIf the play took place in present day instead of in the 17th century the play would have turned out completely different. All the technology we have would have caused a completely different outcome because the technology such as gmail would have help to prevent the accused from being sent to death or give the accused more proof of being wrongly accused. Though the rumors would have spread faster it would also make it to where they would be able to show proof of liers.
ReplyDeleteI think that the modern day technology we have wouldve helped out tremendously to the people of the crucible. They couldve communicated and found out the truth of the people who were being blamed or accused of witch craft. It wouldve help save the lives of many innocent people who were telling the truth and did not take part in witch craft.
ReplyDeleteIn modern day technology we probably would have helped out a pretty good bit to the people of the crucible. They could have found out and communicated to find out the people who did witchcraft.
ReplyDeleteIf "The Crucible" had been set in present day, the technology we have now could have drastically changed the outcome of the Salem witchcraft trials. With the technology we have today, websites and blogs could have been made that would let the truth be known about everything. Abigail could have sent John Proctor an email that said everything that happened which he could have saved to use as evidence in court. Because of the availability of the internet around the world, almost everyone on the face of the planet would know about what was going on. This could cause the witchcraft trials to spread everywhere. Because of websites and blogs like Google Sites, the truth could have spread much faster...but so could rumors. If the truth were to spread fast enough, there is a great possibility that not many people would have died. If the rumors were to spread fast enough, more people could have died. It could have gone either way with today's technological advancements.
ReplyDeleteIf Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible" was set in the present day, I believe that the tools of technology would be used to express the views of the characters. For example, Proctor could use Blogger to create a blog to protest against the witchcraft trials. I also think that he would show his anger about the false accusations by using Blogger. Another example could be that Proctor and Abigail could use Gmail to enhance their affair by communicating with each other. During the trials instead of the reporter using paper and pen he could use a computer or laptop and report everything by using Google Docs. Sites off of Google could also be used by the people who are for witchcraft and by the people who don't agree with it. So as you can see, if "The Crucible" was set in present day it would be totally different than it would in the 17th century because of the advancement in technology.
ReplyDeleteMaybe with these technologies they would have been able to provide proof of their innocence, like if Abigail would have sent a message to John telling him about what really happened in the woods, he could have shown that message to prove they were lying.
ReplyDeleteI believe if Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible," was set in the present day most things wouldn't have happened the way they did. One thing that would definitely be different was the way John Proctor and Abigail Williams had an affair. I think that maybe he would've have texted or emailed her and kept their messages to prove she was lying to the other people. Another thing I believe would be different is they way the people got killed that were accused of witchcraft. I really think that they would've just been put in prison for a long time. One other thing that would more than likely be different is they probably would've used the internet to find out the truth about witchcraft.
ReplyDeletejohn and abigail could have been texting and he could have saved the text where they talked to prove she was lying.
ReplyDeleteIf Arthur Miller had set the Crucible in the present than I don't think anyone who have died because you could have used Google to search Witchcraft and also the social media could have gotten the story of the witchcraft trails out so more people could know about the trail like the News. Also John could have proved Abigail was a lair by showing Facebook message sent to her. They could use lie detectors to prove the girls where lying about the witchcraft in the forest. John Proctor could have made a Blog. They could have used Gmail to also show messages sent from him and Abigail.
ReplyDeleteIf the crucible were set in today's time and had modern technology the outcome would be significantly different. Hopefully everybody in the play would be more educated and would simply know that there were no such thing as witches, but if they continued to be as crazy and deluded as they were in the play nothing would change. I suppose that they could use google to search and see if there were a such thing as witches, and maybe even email someone they consider a higher authority to be sure, but all in all I think that with the mindset that they had things would have ended up the same.
ReplyDeleteI think that they could have saved a lot of people, but also could have made things worse. John Proctor could have used something like Gmail to spread the word out about Abigail's lies. If possibly the whole Proctor and Abigail affair had been them sending emails to each other, John could have used the emails as proof that Abigail was lying. The people of Salem could have used Google to search witchcraft and could have gotten a better idea of what the signs of witchcraft were to better identify it. This technology could have made things way worse though. Abigail and her followers could have used a social network like Google+ to spread their lies more faster and efficiently.
ReplyDeleteThings would have changed because they would have more information on witchcraft. Technology would have also made the situation worse because more rumors would have spread because the technology would have made the rumors spread faster.
ReplyDeleteThey could have used gmail, yahoo, and other social sites to help the people who died from getting hung. Like when Abigail lied on John Proctor if he would've had gmail or a blog he could'vehad evidence that she did do those things and then he would of never gotten hung he would've still been alive in the movie.
ReplyDeleteIf the had internet they may have been able to learn more about witchcraft and figure what they are dealing with. They also would have been able to send emails and stuff to each other about the situation. They probably would have save alot of lives back in the day
ReplyDeleteIf The Crucible was set in present day, those first 12 people probably wouldn't have been killed. Using Google search they could have found out accurate information on witchcraft from others that would help prove guiltiness or innocence. Also, if they had email, they could ask people from other places in the world of their experiences, or find and contact better specialists of witchcraft in order to determine whether or not people were actually participating in it. If they had any social networking, everybody and their mother would have already known about John and Abigail's affair, so that would have helped prevent some of the convictions by showing that Abigail was basically a compulsive liar.
ReplyDeleteCould technology have changed the way things might have been if "The Crucible" was set in the present day? Most definitely. If you think about it, John Proctor and Abigail could have sent emails back and forth and that would of made things worse if John would've shown the messages to the court. Also, if they had Google, they could search witchcraft and figure that out it's not real. Or that they did not do anything related to witchcraft.
ReplyDeleteIf they would have had emails back in the day they could email each other about what was going on. They would all be able to communicate better. If they had pictures like proof of them doing things they could send them to each other. They could also keep copies of the emails to prove things that we're said.
ReplyDeleteIn The Crucible, people could have known more about the witch craft hunt than JUST the people in Salem. They could have used their phones, email, facebook, or twitter if they wanted to. I think it could have been better by having an email because you could send them a message. Send someone a text, message me, or tweet them. Abigail could probably have been caught by all the stuff her and John Proctor talked about. I think that could have been a better thing because Abigail wouldn't have gotten of the hook so easily if everyone could have seen what her and John Proctor were talking about. So there is my thoughts on technology in The Crucible.
ReplyDeleteThey could have looked on Abigail's Gmail to see if she emailed anyone about the lies she told which she probably did. An Email could have also made them over turn the court because they would have heard about what happened in Andover, which would have saved many lives.

ReplyDeleteIf they would of had internet, they could have gone on Abigail's gmail to see if she had emailed her friends anything about the witchcrafting. Also, if they would have had google they could have looked up witchcraft and proved that they did not do witchcraft.
ReplyDeleteAbigail probably would have took pictures and videos of her and John and put them on Facebook and Twitter. She also would've posted mean and offensive statuses about Elizabeth on both. You could check her Gmail and probably find all kinds of bad messages to John, Elizabeth, Mary Warren, and the other girls.
ReplyDeleteIf the Crucible would have to take place in our present time many things could have changed. Such as for all the unfair deaths in this play. They could have easy proved Abigail guilty. There is allot of ways to hack peoples emails or even save what people say to you and send it to everyone else. For instance everything Abigail said in email could have been sent to the court to prove her guilty before making rash decisions.
ReplyDeleteif the characters in the crucible had internet at the time, things would have been going a lot different. they court cases would be different, because they could look up the backgrouds on people, court cases would be more in depth, and the court would be ruled by a jury.
ReplyDeleteDo you really think any of this would have happened nowa days anyway? Like for instance, if proctor wanted to cheat on his wife it'd be on MeetMe, Facebook, or like that new dating website thats only for farmers. (Or a site where people find one night stands). If this did so happen in our time period, not only would they have Abigail caught they would have put her in jail not a prison. We don't hang people anymore. Also they could have used a video camera or made her admit it in an e-mail that she used witchcraft in the woods and caught her. Lord knows they could have put it on they're Facebook status and say "Hey if you see Abigail or her friends using witchcraft message me" or "Like this if you saw Abigail and her friend use witchcraft". Anyways also they wouldn't really have done anything now because witchcraft isn't illegal now. (That I now of). If technology was used in this play and it was in our current time period it would have ended with someone finding Abigail's e-mail probaly telling her friend to meet up in the woods to preform they're witchcraft....or in her basement or someting. Thats what I think anyway.
ReplyDeleteI think that some things would have been worse but other things would have been better. Some things that would be worse is that the rumors would have been spread worldwide and about people around the world in an instant. Instead of just having trials for witchcraft, there would also have been murder trials, robery trials, etc. Some things that would've been better is that the judges and general population would've had more information on the subject at question (not just witchcraft, but other crimes that would be happening) from online sources like Google, Bing, and other search sites. They would've been able to look at emails and social media sites against the "witch" and the "victem" for proof of their statements.
ReplyDeleteThe things that happened in "The Crucible" would have changed if this story would have taken place in present time. Like when Parris saw Abigail dancing in the woods. Immediately the next day everyone would have know about it. Because he would text someone about it. Then the person Parris text would text someone else and it would continue till the whole village knew about it. Proctor and Abigail could use Gmail to communicate with each other without anyone knowing.
ReplyDeleteIf the same events were to occur in modern times, however unlikely, it would be faced in a much different fashion. With internet resources the characters would be capable of doing thorough in depth research. This includes: online articles, medical research, profiles, emails, and other useful sites that would supply them with related information.
ReplyDeleteWith this knowledge at their fingertips, the characters who accused the witches would have information on how to fix their problems that were not caused by the witches. A good example would be Walcott's pigs. He lacked the capabilities to take care of a pig, so he blamed it immediately on Martha Corey. If he would go online and look up how to take care of pigs, he would not have had all of them die. Mrs. Putnam is another example. If she would have went to a doctor or medical physician after she lost 9 of her babies, she would have found the cause to be medical.
All of these situations are a result of suspicious and scared people. In the modern world this would be unlikely to happen, but if it did, the events would not have spiraled out of control like this.
Well, if Miller had the nice technology as we have today, then he could have set up a blog on google chrome and shared it with everyone so that everyone could see. They could use Facebook and see if the girls were in the wood that night, because it tell you where they are located at and at what time.
ReplyDeleteI think if this story was placed in present day time the whole theme of the story would be altered. The story for one would not even use the word witch because in our society today the only time we think about witches are in Scooby-Doo and in fictional movies. Also the story would probable start of by being on a social networking site like Facebook or Twitter. The indecent would then end up in the real world with people yelling at each other over something stupid.
ReplyDeleteI think that if this book would have taken place is today's day and time things would have been completely different. There would be ways to tell who did what with the modern technology that we have today. There would have been people with recorders under their shirts to have proof of what others said, there would also be investigations with DNA samples and all kinds of technology. If the characters had google, gmail, blogger, and things of that nature, the characters could have blogged everything that was going on, and could have emailed each other instead of everything being "your word against mine". I believe the whole story would have turned out completely different.
ReplyDeleteI think things would have changed tremendously. First of all the rumors would have been ten times worse because people would have made a video of witchcraft and put it on youtube. The also would have posted all kinds of stuff on facebook about it. They also would have shot the witches instead of hanging them.
ReplyDeleteThe outcome of the Crucible would be very diffident if it were to take place in modern times. Thanks to Emails and blogs and even video surveillance or photographs Abigail would have been discovered and sent to prison or worse. Everyone's opinions would have been shared so long as people cared to review them because of television and the internet. John Proctor's relationship with his wife might have also been more trusting because Rebecca could have checked up on him with her cellphone.
ReplyDeleteIf Arthur Miller had set the Crucible in the present day, a lot of things would have been different. Due to the fact with today's technology they maybe could have found evidence. Interrogation now a days would have been factored in also. Instead of being hunged the people found guilty would have been injected "put to sleep", or sentenced to prison. With today's technology cell phones and recorders could have been used to get their voices recorded. Also with today's apps anything could have been positive. The story could have been greatly altered.
ReplyDeleteThe outcome of the Crucible would be very different if it were to take place in modern times.
ReplyDeleteI think that with technology things will get worse instead of better. This is because with internet people can spread rumors worldwide instead of talking about it around town. They can get people on their side by just harsh words on the internet and the people who is reading it may not even know who they are just go against it just because of what they read on some site.
ReplyDeleteIf The Crucible was in today's time period, they could have found blog entries from the girls, telling the truth to there lies. On g-mail they could have found the girl's strategies on how they were going to go about everything. They could have seen e-mails between Proctor and Abigail around the time of the affair. In that e-mail it could have shown where Abigail threatened Proctor's Wife and their marriage.
ReplyDeleteIf Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible" was set in the present day, so many things would be different. The townspeople could make blog posts about their feelings on the witch trials. They could use Google Search to find more information on witches. If Abigail and John Proctor had email, their affair would most likely have a different turn out. The judges in court could use Google Docs to record the trials in court. The people against the witch trials could even make anonymous pages to express themselves.
ReplyDeleteI think that if this play would have taken place in present day, the story would have ended differently, and a lot faster. They could have easily checked Abigail's emails, Facebook, Twitter, and Google searches. They could check for suspicious e-mails or text messages about what the girls did, they could check for pictures or videos of girls in the woods or of her and John Proctor. They could check her Facebook or Twitter for mean posts about Elizabeth, or clues about the witchery. They could also check Google searches for any searches about potions or spells or anything like that.
ReplyDeleteIf they had the technology we have today like "Google","Facebook",etc. i think some minor changes would have been made because while its true that you can hack almost anything fairly easy its also true that the internet is "HUGE" and there are many places and ways to hide secretes or even if Abigail did not want to send messages on the web all she would have to do is type it down on a document save that document to a flash drive or floppy disk and then deliver it to whomever she wanted to so i think that no matter how advanced you are there will always be rumors and there will always be controversy and corruption.
ReplyDeleteI believe if the people in the crucible would have been better off with today's technology. Because they could have talked on their cellphones instead of sneaking around and keeping things from each other would have been simpler. Also to prove the witches guilty they could have taken a video. As well as done a background check on each of them.
ReplyDeleteIf this book was in present day there would be a lot of things changed. For one the emails that Abigail sent, they probably would have brought all those up in court,
ReplyDeleteThey probably would have had cameras or something in the woods that would have proven that they were fooling around with witchcraft. And also if they had a Facebook or maybe even a blog if they updated it saying where they were and what they were doing then if they had their navigation on then maybe people would have been able to spot out where they were.
If this play were using technology in present time, the townspeople would post on facebook about what Abigail and the girls did in the woods and it would spread around town. I think another author would write this book in a different way about witchcraft. Instead, they would write about murder and robbery.
ReplyDeleteI think if they had the technology we have in "The Crucible" things would have changed drastically. I think Gmail would have gave the courts proof that Abigail was lying by searching her emails. Also, the use of Blogger would have let the world know of the injustice going on in Salem and got them better judges and fairer trials. I think Google Search would have let people in Salem search characteristics of witches to help make their judgments of the accused.
ReplyDeleteIf they had internet back then, they could have checked files from her email, or her history from Google or Bing. Such as how to lie your way out of a criminal situation, or how to hide traces of withcraft. If they were in the 21st century then they would have more knowledge about things such as witchcraft.
ReplyDeleteTechnology changes everything. If someone was to look up something, or talk to someone. They'd be able to track it and find out the truth. People would be able to share their feelings, without telling who they truly are. Technology would have made this trail so much faster and a lot easier.
ReplyDeleteIf the people in this story had these tools then they would have looked on Google Search and found out that witches didn't exist but there are things one hundred times worse than witches all over the internet.
ReplyDeleteTechnology could turn this whole story around. There is a lot bigger chance or being able to find out anyone's crime. You could Google Search all the clues and try to piece them together. You might could go through anyone of the character's Gmail and see if there were any clues to lead to prove them guilty. You could also go through one of the person's texts to see if there was anything that might also lead to prove that they were guilty.
ReplyDeleteIf they had technology back in the day it would have helped to let the court understand the witches on trial. Computers would have helped them by giving them access to the witches social history. Mrs. Nurse blamed one of the witches for killing all of the children except for one.
ReplyDeleteIf this was Present-day, technology would have changed everything the e-mails that Abigail sent would have been printed off and taken to the court and they probably would have had cellphones so they could have went through phone records to prove if their guilty or not.
ReplyDelete
