Mary Warren stands up...

Looking back at lines 323-344 in Act Two, it appears obvious that Mary's defense of Elizabeth Proctor in court changed the power dynamics among Mary, Elizabeth, and John Proctor.  How is the situation in the Proctor household a microcosm of the upheaval going on throughout the community?

  2. Mary Warren says that Goody Proctor was accused in court and she stood up for her. She said Elizabeth never used witchcraft. They dismissed the case because Mary is so close to Elizabeth. In the Proctor house they are mad about the affair that Proctor had with Abigail. They think that is why Elizabeth was accused for using witchcraft.

  6. Elizabeth Proctor learns that she was accused in court for witchcraft, but Mary Warren dismissed all signs of witchcraft of Elizabeth. Mary said, "But I said I never see no sign you ever sent your spirit out to hurt no one, and seeing I do live so closely with you, they dismissed it." Also since Mary is involved in the court, she feels like she should be viewed as an adult and not a child. "I'll not be ordered to bed no more, Mr. Proctor! I am eighteen and a woman, however single!"

  7. They are focused on what is going on within their household. What is happening in the community outside their house does not concern them at the moment. Elizabeth is accused of being a witch, but Mary Warren says that she is not a witch. The court reconsidered because Mary lives with Elizabeth and John. Although Mary says she isn't a witch, the town believes otherwise and they arrested Elizabeth. Eizabeth will be hanged unless proven otherwise and John will possibly go to jail for trying to prevent it. I think that Mary will end up being accused of being a witch and be hanged.

  22. This situation in the Proctor home is like the witch trials. No one knows the truth about why Abigail all of a sudden wants to take Elizabeth out except Elizabeth, John, and Abby. Mary Warren knows that Abby is a fraud. Proctor wants her to go tell the court. Mary knows the truth Abby, just like John knows the truth behind Abigail's actions.

  34. Mary went to court to try and defend Goody Proctor who was accused of witchcraft. You could also say she was forced because John Proctor dragged her up there in hopes of saving his wife's life. In the end Mary Warren stabs him in the back and John admits to his affair with Abigail.

  41. Everything throughout the town is changing. People are turning against friends and respected people in the community. That's the same thing that happens in the Procter house. Originally when Elizabeth's name was brought up in court Mary defended her and it was dismissed because she was so close to the Procters. Then, after a little pressure was added and the girls turned on Mary, she starts turning against the people that she lives with and is supposed to respect. That's what's happening all through the town.

  50. Well people are betraying eachother all over the place and opportunists like Thomas Putnam and Abigail are taking advantage of it. And the Proctor house is no different with Mary Warren defending the Proctors but eventually turning on them when she gets pressured by Abigail and the other girls in the group.

  56. Mary Warren stood up for Goody Proctor in court. Now she has a little bit of control over her own life, instead of the Proctor's having full control over her life. Tituba, Abigail, Mary, and Betty are slowing ga8ining control of the adults in Salem.

  57. Marry was all like "I saved your wife's life today!" and then Proctor was all like "I will not whip you. But I'm still mad at you." and so it was like you help me i help you(Sorta). So there was madness in that house, sorta like the madness outside the house. >.<

  58. Mary Warren is smart. She feels that she should be treated like a Queen since she got Mrs.Proctor out of trouble. She now wants more respect from the two. She thinks she deserves to be rewarded or something when she was the one who brought the poppet into the house and had something to do with Elizabeth being accused.
